Busy week ahead in Brentwood

Who has time for the mid-summer doldrums when there is so much to see and do? Here are just a few suggestions to help fill your week. If you know of more, please let me know!

The Friends of the Brentwood Library's quarterly book sale opens Wednesday and runs through Saturday at the library. As mentioned in an earlier post, science fiction fans will be happy to know one patron made a huge donation that will be available. This is also a great opportunity for students to find last-minute required Summer Reading books and books for next fall's literature classes at real bargain prices.
Check out my previous post for details: http://tinyurl.com/BWscifi (just remember that any references to NEXT week are now THIS week!)

Speaking of the library, the Summer Reading Program's far from over, with award-winning songwriter and recording artist Katherine Dines presenting an interactive program at 1 p.m. today. It's designed for kids from toddler age to 6.

Just a head's up: The River Park playground and shelter will be closed today through Thursday for playground maintenance. This would be a good time to check out one of the city's other parks and playgrounds, like the newest, Owl Creek Park, between Concord Pass and Chestnut Springs Road in east Brentwood. You'll find a picnic shelter, playground, basketball courts and walking paths.

It's supposed to rain on Wednesday, so you may want to settle on the sofa and watch WC-TV's Classic Football Game of the Week: Brentwood vs. Franklin, September 26, 2006. It will be aired on Comcast Channel 3 at 9 a.m. and 2 and 7 p.m. Also, Brentwood High's 2009 graduation ceremony will air Friday at 10 a.m. and 3 and 8 p.m.

About a zillion years ago I wanted to be Good Morning America's Joan Lunden. A newspaper career won out over a broadcasting one, but I still can't wait to hear Channel 4 news anchor Demetria Kalodimos at Thursday's Women in Business luncheon. Sponsored by the Brentwood Cool Springs Chamber, it begins at 11:15 a.m. at the FiftyForward Martin Center. Noon today is the deadline to register. It's $12 for chamber members, $15 for guests. You can register online at http://www.brentwood.org/ or call the chamber at 373-1595.

A look at the week ahead...

A full report on the weekend's damp festivities is coming, but in the meantime, here's a peak at what's ahead:
New tenant soon for Comp USA site
The city's park board meets today at 5 p.m. at the Municipal Center, 5211 Maryland Way. It's followed at 7 p.m. with the Brentwood Planning Commission meeting.
On the planning commission's agenda, shared by Mayor Betsy Crossley but not found on the city's website, are consent items concerning the former Comp USA location in Mallory Corners Shopping Center (where Barnes & Noble is located); and approval of the final plat for the Brentwood Lights subdivision off Wildwood Drive. (A reliable source tells me the Mallory Corners tenant should be great for Brentwood, but a loss for Franklin.)
Regular agenda items include a signage plan for Town Center Corner retail building; a revised site plan for Judge Beans Bar-B-Que (the old Church Street Pub building), and a revised preliminary plan for the Lombardy subdivision.
If you have interest or questions on any of the above, try to be there.

White will write, Day will 'Dream Big' at library
The Brentwood Library's Summer Reading Program continues to draw big crowds and this week should be no exception.
At 1 p.m on Tuesday, artist Michael P. White will present an interactive program for those age 7 and up. White will teach the audience how one idea can start a story and how authors and illustrators work together to bring a story to life.
And at 1 p.m. Thursday, musician Roger Day will perform a concert with "action-packed and interactive songs that will have kids jumping for joy.
For complete details on all the activities and events the library's scheduled for its Summer Reading Program this year, visit www.brentwood-tn.org/library.

All about Brentwood, brats and beer
Former Brentwood City Commission candidate Devin McClendon is putting his campaign email list to good use by compiling a monthly calendar of Brentwood events. You'll find it at http://www.allaboutbrentwood.blogspot.com/. Among the July events, Devin lists Thursday's
Brats N' Beer Tasting at the Fifty Forward Martin Center, 960 Heritage Way (just north of Concord Road. The tasting begins at 4 pm with a lecture provided by Jeff with Woody's Smokes and Brews.
Hmmmm. Brats. Beer. Think I'll be there.

No panties thrown but ...

The four guys on the makeshift stage didn't exactly look like the four famous skinny Brits but they sure sounded enough like them to keep the crowd smiling.

"Did you see that girl slow dancing with herself?" WannaBeatles lead singer Dennis Scott asked the mostly mature crowd at the Music & Memories benefit concert Thursday night at the Fifty Forward Martin Center.

Turns out Martin Center masseuse Kathy McFarlane, dressed in her '60s best, just couldn't stop herself. But most in the audience seemed content to sway in their chairs. Scott seemed a little disappointed that "no underwear is being thrown at us."

It really was a fun night and one that raised much-needed funds for the senior enrichment center. You see, the beautiful facility in the heart of affluent Brentwood suffers from a perception problem. People think it, and its members, are flush with cash. Not so. So fundraising is always a struggle.

If you have some extra funds to disburse, consider a visit to the center. There you can talk to the staff, volunteers and members and maybe throw a few of those extra ones, or hundreds, or thousands, its way.

And if you weren't at last night's concert, here's a taste of what you missed (to the tune of "Yesterday"):

Creme Brulee
I signed up for Jennie Craig today
They said as I was being weighed
"You've had too much Creme Brulee."

You have another chance to hear them June 28 at Crockett Park as part of the city's Summer Concert Series.

Sweet!
